Here you see my first view of Venice as I stepped out of the train station. It's a narrower part of the Grand Canal, and my hotel was close by, in a narrow street with a whole string of budget accommodations. The pictures that follow are mostly of the 'standard' sights of the city, though maybe they convey some of the joy I took in wandering through the fabled city.

From the order of slides in the box, it appears that I immediately took a vaporetto, the public transportation mode of Venice (other than the completely unaffordable gondolas):

But I see that my first stop was not the Piazza San Marco but Peggy Guggenheim's modern art museum, housed in her palazzo along the Grand Canal, with an attractive patio:

Then I headed farther down the Grand Canal, taking a shot of just one of the incredible palazzi that line both shores:

And finally my vaporetto landed in front of the Doge's Palace, beyond which was the Square itself:

And here is the façade of St Mark's in glorious Kodachrome:

Here are two more views from closer up:

As usual, I had trouble photographing the interior. But I could climb to the terrace and stand alongside the famous bronze horses, looking down upon the Square and left to the Doge's Palace and the Grand Canal beyond it, not to mention seeing the horses right next to me and the stonework above me.

Sunset made the scene all the more enchanting:

I took only a few other pictures of Venice on this trip: the Rialto Bridge; the baroque façade of the San Moise Church (looking begrimed--nowadays gleaming white, if you look up photos); a typical alleyway, the kind you could have fun getting lost in; and an equally narrow canal:

One day I rode across the Lagoon, beyond Venice proper, to the islands of Burano (with the brightly painted houses) and Torcello (with its campanile and Santa Fosca Church).

I went out to the Lido too but didn't take any pictures. My only other shot is of a regatta seen from the landing near the Doge's Palace:

I'm surprised I took so few pictures of Venice, but I'm guessing I was running out of rolls of film and couldn't afford to buy more on my tight budget. I needed to save a few more rolls for Innsbruck and Paris, my other two stops on the trip.
